Re: How to measure "real" material for rendering

Measured BRDFs are an active field of research, I think a lot of the setups are experimental. I'd look at some of the papers on the subject, and maybe contact the authors directly.

Pathtracing Subreddit

Hey guys. Just wanted to let everyone know I've just created a subreddit for pathtracing. Seems like it's a bit slow here these days, so I'm hoping that adding a new channel for discussion might start some conversations again. Cheers!

Re: Separate GPU compute kernels vs. a single GPU kernel

From my experience, the main motivation to split kernels is to encourage more coherent instructions and memory accesses by performing some sort of coherency operation between kernels (e.g. - sorting rays by leaf nodes after the traversal kernel to coalesce triangle access, material evaluation instru...

Re: CPU (real time) raytracing references and articles?

Right, well as far as CPU papers go I like "dynamic ray stream traversal" for capturing hidden ray coherence without compromising independent path orders (as with packet traversal), and using single ray traversal when coherence is lost. They also have code available with a few smart optimizations. I...

Re: algorithm choice

Depending on your usage, keep in mind some structures/methods are patented (nVidia likes to do this)

Re: CPU (real time) raytracing references and articles?

It's all too easy to get dissuaded from the CPU when you look at recent research results, but everybody measures MRays/s differently (some to a curious degree). I think what happened is that researchers (in all compute fields) flocked to the GPU for its relatively effortless parallelism and the asso...
