Ideas request for a specific raytracing application

hi all, I am developing a raytracing for a very specific application (i.e: not a general raytracing). It will render electronic PCB boards (hopefully in) realtime. I have already identified and implemented a set of specific primitives for this application (ex: round segments, rings, discs, etc..) No...

Re: Float versus double

I think I read something about "if you want to make a serious precision / correctness algorithm" you probably have to use fixed point math (and add as much bits as you need to get your desire precision). Also, I already used a 2D library (i.e: polygon operation libs) that only uses integer data so t...

Re: Float versus double

Due the nature the objects I am dealing in a current project, I am normalizing all object and space to fit between -1.0f and 1.0f So for raytrace I use floats, but in some pre-calc & intermediate process (of the model/object data) I use doubles. I was trying to look for some studies regarding "norma...

Re: Status of acceleration structures, What did I miss?

I think I found some answers to my own question: http://www.nvidia.com/docs/IO/77714/sbvh.pdf In general, highest rendering performance is achieved with kDtrees and bounding volume hierarchies (BVH). Especially BVHs have recently been attracting increasing attention for several reasons: BVHs are sim...

Status of acceleration structures, What did I miss?

I've been away from Raytracing news for a few years.
At that time, kd-trees was the hot topic, then, the Bounding interval hierarchy come with similar? performance..
But now, seems that all my searches lead again to (the old) Bounding Volumes H.

Intel Acquisition of Altera, good news to CPU raytracing?

So.. looks like Intel acquire Altera and will being FPGAs to general CPUs.
Probably it will take some years until we can get a CPU+FPGA in our home computers..
Could that be a good news to bring back CPU raytracing? What can we expect from a FPGA vs GPU in relation to raytracing?

Re: CPU (real time) raytracing references and articles?

I think what happened is that researchers (in all compute fields) flocked to the GPU for its relatively effortless parallelism and the associated influx of results, meanwhile under-researching the exploitation of modern CPU architecture. That's precisely what I meant by "fading away", the researche...

CPU (real time) raytracing references and articles?

Hello all,

It seems that realtime raytracing on CPUs is fading away because of the advance of GPUs, still.. does anyone know a good reference with examples / materials / etc for RTRT on CPUs ?
