Re: Total SAH of a BVH

It seems to me that you'd want more-or-less an average cost of traversing the tree. If you had this, you could insert the tree as a node into another tree with the SAH :) If you think about this at any given node, it would be Ct + Pl*Cl + Pr*Cr where Ct = node traversal cost Pl = probability of trav...

Re: Voxel vs BVH

It seems though that the (virtual) grid will need to be extremely fine to capture smooth surfaces unless the cells describe isosurfaces via corner values and gradients; at that point it becomes less cheap too ;) For any real scene you need an adaptive grid, octree, BVH, or kdtree+leaf box to make th...

Re: Request: Soda Hall

Well, second time fails too. Probably larger than the maximum upload size (sucky that it doesn't tell you this before you wait for forever). For now, the file can be found here: http://www.eng.utah.edu/~budge/soda.tar.7z This is probably not a very good permanent location; if someone has a better sp...

Re: Request: Soda Hall

I've got it, but it is prohibitively large for upload here; I tried once already, and it seems that my page reset just as upload finished (after about 20 minutes). I will try a different compression technique and see if I can push something smaller.

Re: Dissapointing building times from lbvh gpu based builder

On the other hand, understanding bias and it's sources is important. For example, proper importance sampling is unbiased, and doing it wrong can have important consequences. Even in algorithms such as photon mapping that have bias, we still try to limit the sources of our bias, and reduce those that...

Re: Dissapointing building times from lbvh gpu based builder

I don't hate unbiased. I think it's a useful concept. The trouble is when people think that unbiased means anything without stating the problem being solved. Or to assume that biased solutions must be worse.

Re: Suggest a new domain name for your favorite forum!

We probably have enough ideas here to put them to a vote. Jacco, is it possible to put a poll widget into the thread?

Re: Suggest a new domain name for your favorite forum!

There are already other rendering forums (fora), and ompf has always been more ray tracing oriented (although certainly digressions into other algorithms has not, and should not be disallowed). Therefore, I prefer raydev. rtdev seems good as well. As for .org vs .com vs .net, I'd say first .org, the...
