modified sensor sensitivity equation

Hi all, Based on http://graphics.tudelft.nl/~dietger/ survey report, I cannot comprehend on how equation 3.15 was formulated based figure 3.5. Can anyone please expound on the probabilities formulation/derivation. I have also noted some inconsistencies on equation 3.18 and 3.19 whereby inserting equ...

Re: Vertex merging paper and SmallVCM

Wow, thanks for the heads up ingenious :o.

In terms of PPM, does anyone have an idea how one can estimate the most appropriate kernel radius for area density approximation without manually fine tuning it? :D

Mixing Monte Carlo and Progressive Rendering for Improved Gl

From the authors' abstract, "In this paper we seek to eliminate the noise caused by caustic paths during progressive Monte Carlo path tracing. We employ altering strategy over path space, handling each subspace using specialized derivations of path tracing and progressive photon mapping. Evaluating ...

Re: Vertex Merging

With regards to the link @fpsunflower has given, "Unified Sampling Framework", the authors have pointed out skepticism in the "VM paper" probability density function formulation being scaled by their proposed area density estimation kernel, since the area term is measured in dA instead of dA-1. IMO ...

Re: Vertex Merging

Wow! :o Here are some supplementary images from the same authors. I'm still amazed by the overall competitiveness of VM+BDPT as compared to PPM, BDPT and VM.

Re: Vertex Merging

@jbikker - IMHO your suggestion is still valid, "at low spp (e.g. SDS dominated scene), this helps more than at high spp (direct light dominated scene)"

Vertex Merging

From the authors website "We present vertex merging - a bidirectional path sampling technique for Monte Carlo light transport integration. Vertex merging is simple and more computationally efficient for specular-diffuse-specular effects than the currently available techniques in bidirectional path t...

Re: consistency and unbiasedness

@outofspace ... Referring to light transport simulation, so called " unbiased sampling method ", as biased because of its imperfection to SDS paths is quite vague. Biasness in this case comes from the scene not being "100% Physical Scene" , this is a result of the virtual pinhole camera model contr...
