Re: UPS vs VCM?

Perhaps in that last case you could benefit from "Robust Adaptive Photon Tracing using Photon Path Visibility".

Re: Smooth Shading with bidirectional path tracing?

Veach's thesis discusses issues with bidirectional methods and smoothed normals, have you seen that...?

Re: Caustics causing trouble in London

The Disney concert hall in Los Angeles causes similar problems for nearby buildings. Maybe to a lesser degree (hee hee).

Question about "Five Common Misconceptions about Bias in..."

In http://cs.au.dk/~toshiya/misc.pdf the author mentions the "geometry term" (in particular from a shadow ray) as example of variance being NOT finite and existing. 1) Is the geometry term "G" from Veach's thesis, namely: visibility*cos(theta1)*cos(theta2)/r^2? 2) Why would this be either not finite...

Eric Veach accepts Academy Award for his PhD thesis

Eric Veach was awarded an Academy Award this weekend for his PhD thesis contributions regarding multiple importance sampling. Pretty cool! Actors Michael B Jordan and Kristen Bell presented the award and mention MCPT.

Re: 64 core cpu from intel

Will this new CPU let regular threaded CPU code run on all the cores? If so that should be a lot faster than using a GPU since CPU code cannot run on a GPU.

Re: giga rays on intel phi

and if we can trust intel we see the phi as a standard cpu in 1-2 years
What does this mean? Will the Phi be a drop-in replacement for regular CPUs or something else? (Do you have a link?)

Re: BSSRDF Importance Sampling

Thanks for link, joedizzle.

Great presentation, thanks Chris Kulla and crew. Looking forward to trying this out.

Also, I just noticed for first time Chris Kulla has a fractal render. Looks fantastic!
