Intel Acquisition of Altera, good news to CPU raytracing?

Post by mrluzeiro » Wed Jun 03, 2015 12:26 pm

So.. looks like Intel acquire Altera and will being FPGAs to general CPUs.
Probably it will take some years until we can get a CPU+FPGA in our home computers..
Could that be a good news to bring back CPU raytracing? What can we expect from a FPGA vs GPU in relation to raytracing?

It's interesting news to a lot of algorithms I am sure. I am kind of doubtful of how this will impact raytracing however. The current GPGPU programming model is flexible enough that you can implement ray-tracing on it but here might be some room for novel optimizations here.
