Intel Xeon Phi Preferred Pricing - Only $400 per Card ?
Re: Intel Xeon Phi Preferred Pricing - Only $400 per Card ?
Phi has dozens of megabytes of cache, compared to hundreds of kilobytes on a typical GPU chip. GPUs have to stream potentially hundreds of megabytes of textures per frame, so they did not (need to) evolve large caches. Phi was retargeted from graphics to compute, so maybe it can make good use of its large caches there.

$400 ? no its more like $2400. who will give it a try ?

I remember to have already seen this slide, if my memory doesn't fail, it is a 1.8x when just recompiling C/C++ code. I hope something coded in OpenCL will run a lot faster.dbz wrote:Xeon Phi ray tracing performance is only about 2x cpu performance. Rather dissapointing imho.

these are results from the intel labs with really poor scaling. we have seen much better rt results with phi comparable to up2date gpus.

If I remember correctly, they compared the Phi with two 8-core Xeons.

If that's true, and they didn't do anything special to take advantage of the SIMD units, then that's pretty good performance, I'd say. I'd imagine that there is at least something going on with the SIMD units though.

Intel has just released the OpenCL SDK for Xeon Phi: http://software.intel.com/en-us/vcsourc ... ncl-sdk-xe
Emm ... they have released the SDK but where can the hardware be bought

There is a news article the card will be generally available on the 28th of january. Its price seems too high for ray tracing imho and I would wait and see some optimized benchmarks on diffuse rays first before buying it. The embree guys should be working on a xeon phi implementation.

Are they selling cards only embedded in servers ?
